History of March Construction

The roots of March Construction go back to 1972 when Jim Martinson acquired the operations of Gene Shaw and started doing business as James Martinson General Contractor, Inc. At that time, Jeff Specht worked summers for Jim while attending college and began working full-time as an estimator/project manager in October 1984. Jim continued operations under the name of James Martinson General Contractor, Inc., until June 1992 when he and Jeff Specht formed March Construction, Inc.

The emphasis of both companies has always been to deliver the absolute highest quality finish work achievable, while setting standards for providing the owners and architects with unparallel service. By providing this level of service to their clients, they have relationships that have continued with various single clients for over twenty-five years. This level of successful relationships has solidified the success of the construction company through the years.

In July 2004, Jim Martinson submitted notice of his retirement from March Construction, with the commitment to remain on-board for one year in order to facilitate a smooth transition for the new leadership of the company. Since the prior 10 years were spent shifting the day-to-day operations and business development from Jim Martinson to Jeff Specht, the gradual transition in leadership and responsibility positioned the company to continue to be successful for many years to come. During that time period, Albert Ortiz took on many of the duties and responsibilities that Jeff Specht performed as an employee and eventual partner of Jim Martinson. Albert possesses the kind of work ethic and attention to detail that was needed to assure the continued success of March Construction. His loyalty and dedication earned him a minority shareholder interest in the company.

Upon Jim’s retirement, Jeff Specht assumed the position of President of March Construction, and Albert Ortiz became the Vice-President. Together, they committed to carrying on the company started by Jim Martinson 37 years ago.

Shortly thereafter, in 2005, March Construction, Inc. added a Concrete subcontracting division headed up by Jack Claflin, who had run a successful concrete company for over ten years. His experience and knowledge, along with his numerous business contacts, added a new business component/division to March Construction. Over the last four years, the Concrete division has successfully run and completed numerous projects not only in the State of Texas, but expanded the business to include projects in the states of New Mexico, Nevada, and Louisiana. This division added a higher level of success and profitability to the company and created the synergy needed for the company to remain competitive in the construction business.

The future continues to look promising for March Construction as the leadership of the company concentrates on taking a conservative approach to managing a profitable construction company. Their blueprint for success includes selecting projects that experience has shown to produce the highest profit margins. Moreover, their dedication to control growth, so as not to exceed physical and financial resources, has proven to be more than successful, as well as their ability to maintain and manage overhead expenses in order to remain as competitive as possible. Finally, their commitment to produce the highest level of craftsmanship possible for their clients solidifies their success and sets them apart from other construction companies that may offer the same type of project work.
